Check for the sticker!
March 25, 2009
Be wary of pawnshops or gold buyers who are using scales that are NOT verified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Their inspectors check for the accuracy of scales that are used in the weighing of gold items. Every scale that has been inspected should have a sticker on it (ours are green and white with the Georgia state seal) that certifies its accuracy. So before you sell or make a loan on your gold jewelry, ask to see the sticker!Chapes-JPL message regarding Gold-Buying Events and Gold-Buying Parties
November 21, 2008
Just a quick note to be wary of those solicitors who advertise that they will buy your gold at events generally held at some hotel or conference center. Most of these "buyers" are operating without a business license or a precious metal dealer license. Thus, what they are doing is AGAINST the law. On the other hand, pawnbrokers must adhere to stringent laws that require proper licensing, information from the seller that often includes a copy of their photo I.D. and a fingerprint, and they must hold all items purchased for up to 30 days (specific holding time depends on the county of operation). Furthermore, pawnbrokers must send their respective police department a report, either by mail or electronically, of all daily transactions.
Also, apparently Gold-Buying Parties are illegal for the same such reason. The hosts of these "parties" are operating WITHOUT a license. Please read this interesting article on the SCNOW website for more details on the probable illegalities of Gold-Buying Parties.
The best advice is to ask questions and be sure that the dealers buying your gold and jewelry are not only reputable, but also properly licensed.
